A word of thanks from the Federation of Irish SocietiesPosted on Tue, May 03, 2011

The following message was sent from the Federation of Irish Societies to all who joined the ‘How Irish Are You’ Census Campaign;

The team here at the Federation of Irish Societies – the organisation that brought you the ‘How Irish Are You?’ census campaign – would like to say a big thank you for making our campaign such a success!

Aimed at tackling the undercount of the Irish in official government statistics (based on the undercount in the 2001 Census), we organised a national campaign to unite the Irish community, voluntary and business organisations.  Our aim was to encourage 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation Irish to register their Irish ethnicity in the 2011 Census.
With your help we have delivered a campaign which has gone above and beyond our expectations. This has been profiled in local, regional and national media including the Independent newspaper, BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, ITV, and even Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff.
It will be 18 months before the numeric results are published, so till then we won’t know how successful we’ve been in encouraging all the Irish people in Britain to ‘tick the Irish box’. In the meantime we want to thank you for embracing and supporting the campaign and helping us spread the word.
The campaign is a fantastic boost to our work as we endeavour to put the issues of the Irish community right at the heart of the government’s agenda. However, there is always more to do. We will be harnessing the momentum of the campaign to keep the community engaged and doing our best to serve, strengthen and celebrate the Irish community in Britain. We hope you’ll be with us all the way.
